Local REALTORS® raise over $50,000 to support Kiwanis summer camp

Members of the Windsor-Essex County Association of REALTORS® (WECAR) participated in a second Annual Gala fundraiser for the Kiwanis Sunshine Point Camp in Harrow. REALTORS® raised over $50,000 so local children in need can attend the Kiwanis Sunshine Point Summer Camp.

The Kiwanis Club of Windsor’s signature program is Sunshine Point Camp. The program targets disadvantaged youth who might not otherwise be able to attend. Approximately half of the campers who are sent to Sunshine Point come from the Windsor-Essex Children’s Aid society in order to provide a refuge from the hardships they face in their daily lives.

“ There will be a lot of happy kids this year who will have the best week of their summer,” said local REALTOR® Dan Inverarity, an organizer for the fundraising gala who also attended the camp as a child.

The summer camp is largely designed to give city-dwelling children between the ages of seven and 14 a chance to share in the experiences of summer camp. The camp, which opened in 1947, was threatened with closure a few years ago until fundraising efforts and donations helped revitalize the campground located near Harrow off Lake Erie on County Road 50. The camp operates for seven weeks in the summer with hopes that 400 children will be able to attend this year.
