Windsor-Essex County Association of REALTORS® statement on CPC GST cut for new homes.
(October 28, 2024) Windsor, ON – In Windsor-Essex, the dream of homeownership is increasingly out of reach for many families. A combination of taxes—from land transfer fees to development charges and sales taxes— is adding tens of thousands of dollars to the cost of buying a home.
The Conservative Party of Canada (CPC) Leader Pierre Poilievre’s promise to eliminate the GST on new homes under $1 million is a bold and much-needed move. Under the proposal, a homebuyer purchasing a $800,000 home could save $40,000 in taxes, a crucial step in making homeownership more attainable. This policy could also drive the creation of an additional 30,000 homes nationwide each year. Local home buyers need relief, and this policy proposal is just what the doctor ordered.
Windsor-Essex County Association of REALTORS® (WECAR™) has been a vocal advocate for reducing the tax burden on homebuyers and sellers. Our work has highlighted the importance of affordable homeownership, and we urge all levels of government to continue reducing taxes on housing. We need policies that treat housing as a necessity, not as an endless source of government revenue.
